LegalZoom Wants $249 a Year for a Job New York Already Does Free
For $99 a year, get a New York agent with a registered address on file, same-day scanning of legal documents, and compliance reminders before state deadlines.
A quick declaration of interest, since we are about to criticize somebody's price. NY Registered Agent.org wrote this, charges $99 a year for New York registered agent service, and benefits directly if you cancel elsewhere. Treat our praise for ourselves with appropriate suspicion. The LegalZoom figure is not a matter of opinion: $249 a year, flat, on automatic renewal, as published when we checked in July 2026, with no first-year discount we could find.
What the Brand Is Actually Worth
Recognition has real value and it would be dishonest to wave it away. LegalZoom has been running since the late 1990s, its name is known to bankers, landlords, and in-laws alike, and a company that size is not going to vanish mid-term and leave your designation pointing at an empty office. For an owner who wants a household name on the paperwork and does not want to research vendors for an afternoon, that is a coherent reason to buy. We are not a household name and cannot pretend to be one.
The Number Next to a State That Charges Almost Nothing
Here is the fact that reframes the whole purchase. Under LLC Law § 301 your New York LLC received an agent for service of process the moment its articles were filed, and that agent is the Secretary of State. You did not choose it, you cannot fire it, and no vendor on earth can replace it. Sue a New York LLC and the papers may be delivered to the state, which accepts them on your behalf and forwards them by mail to the address in your public record. That channel is free and permanent.
So what does New York genuinely cost an LLC every year? Four dollars and fifty cents. The biennial statement runs $9 and comes due once every twenty-four months. LegalZoom's $249 is roughly fifty-five times what the state itself collects to keep your company current. Nobody is doing anything improper by charging it; it simply means the entire fee is discretionary spending, and discretionary spending deserves a hard look.
| LegalZoom | NY Registered Agent.org | New York itself | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annual cost | $249 | $99 | $4.50 (the $9 biennial statement) |
| Billing | Auto-renews | Renews at the same $99 | Filed by you every two years |
| Five years | $1,245 | $495 | $22.50 |
Read that last column honestly and you get an option nobody in this business likes to mention: designate no private agent at all. Keep the state as your only channel, file the $9 statement on schedule, and you are fully compliant. Documents will reach you by mail, at whatever pace the mail moves, at an address any member of the public can look up. If that trade is acceptable to you, close this page and keep your money. We would rather lose a sale than manufacture a requirement.
Where Our $99 Earns Its Keep
Ready when you are. Ordering takes about five minutes.
Order HereFor the owners who do want the private channel, this is what ours includes. A summons handed to us in New York is scanned and lands in your portal before the day ends, with an email pointing you at it, because the clock on a response starts at service and not at whenever you open an envelope. Your filing shows our New York street address in place of your home. Notices reach you ahead of the calendar month carrying your biennial deadline. And the number is $99 in year one, year four, and year nine, with no automatic escalation waiting in the terms.
We are not the cheapest and will not pretend otherwise. BetterLegal publishes $90. Ours belongs among the lowest annual figures a New York business can buy, which is a smaller claim and one we can actually keep.
How New York Takes LegalZoom Off Your Designation Line
New York runs this through a single filing called the Certificate of Change. Here is the whole sequence.
- Sign with the incoming agent first. New York's list of who qualifies is short: an individual living here, an individual with a business address here, or any LLC or corporation that was formed in the state or has been cleared to operate in it.
- Complete form DOS-1359-f, the domestic LLC version. Your exact entity name goes on it along with the incoming agent's name and street address. Authorized foreign LLCs use DOS-1362-f, a different sheet with a similar look.
- Send it in with $30. That is the fee for the certificate your company files. If you have seen $5 quoted somewhere, that belongs to a narrow certificate the agent itself files to fix address details, and a $20 fee applies when an agent changes its own address or resigns. None of those three is interchangeable, and yours is the $30.
- Watch the public record. LegalZoom remains your designated agent until the Division of Corporations processes the change, which is the practical reason the new engagement comes first.
- Then cancel. Not before. Cancelling first will not expose you legally, since the state's own role continues untouched, but it will leave your chosen delivery channel pointed at a company that has stopped working for you.

One more scheduling note. LegalZoom renews automatically, so the calendar entry that matters is not the state's; it is the date your card gets charged again. Work backward from that.
