Rocket Lawyer Sells a Legal Platform. New York Only Wants an Address.

For $99 a year, get a New York agent with a registered address on file, same-day scanning of legal documents, and compliance reminders before state deadlines.

Disclosure up top, because the rest of this page is an argument in our favor. NY Registered Agent.org runs this site and sells New York registered agent service for $99 a year. Rocket Lawyer's $125 is their published figure, taken from our July 2026 check exactly as it appeared, and the criticism below is aimed at what the fee contains, never at whether they charge it honestly.

Rocket Lawyer Does Not Play Games With the Price

Give them this, and it is more than most of their competitors deserve. Every membership tier at Rocket Lawyer carries the same $125 annual agent fee, with no introductory rate that expires and no discount that quietly doubles at renewal. Whichever plan you hold, the agent line reads the same. In a category built on teaser pricing, flat and consistent is a genuine virtue, and we are not going to manufacture an objection to it.

You Are Buying a Membership With an Agent Inside It

The honest criticism is about composition. That $125 is attached to a legal-services subscription: document templates, attorney questions, a library of forms, a whole platform, with registered agent duty tucked in among the features. Use the platform and the arithmetic works fine; you are getting a stack of tools plus the agent seat for one price.

If all you needed was somebody in New York to receive a summons, though, the rest of that stack is money spent on software you will not open. Under LLC Law § 211-A(a) the entire recorded relationship between a New York LLC and its registered agent fits on a single certificate: a name, a street address, and a signature. That is the whole legal artifact. Everything else in a $125 subscription is product, not obligation.

Worth knowing where New York's own bar sits, too. A lawsuit against a New York LLC can always be delivered to the state itself, which accepts process on your company's behalf as a matter of law and forwards it to the address in your public file. That arrangement costs nothing and cannot be cancelled. The only recurring bill the state sends is a $9 biennial statement, which annualizes to $4.50. Rocket Lawyer's $125 covers roughly twenty-eight years of that.

Two hundred and sixty dollars over a decade is not a dramatic gap, and we will not dress it up as one. The question is simpler than the money: do you want the platform? Answer yes and Rocket Lawyer is a defensible purchase. Answer no and you are financing the parts you skipped.

Ours does one job and prices it once. When a process server reaches our New York address, the paperwork is digitized and sitting in your account that same afternoon, with an email sent as the file posts. The designation on your state record carries our address rather than your home. Reminders go out before the calendar month that carries your biennial deadline. The fee is $99, and the renewal notice you receive next year will also read $99. The only additional charge anywhere in the service is a flat $15 for imaging a piece of routine business mail, printed here instead of sprung on you later.

Before this hardens into a superlative: BetterLegal publishes $90 a year, under our figure. What survives the correction is that $99 ranks among the lowest flat rates a New York business can buy for this service.

The New York Certificate That Ends a Rocket Lawyer Appointment

Everything happens through one document. Here is the order.

Engage the successor. The state accepts a New York resident, someone whose business address sits in New York, an LLC organized here or authorized here, or a corporation in either of those positions. Any real vendor clears that bar, so choose on price and handling.

Fill out DOS-1359-f. That is the Certificate of Change for a domestic LLC. It wants your entity name exactly as the state has it, plus the incoming agent's name and New York street address. If your company was organized in another state and authorized here, the correct sheet is DOS-1362-f.

Pay $30. That single figure covers the certificate your company files, whether it names a new agent, replaces the current one, or revokes the designation entirely. Two other numbers float around New York guides, $5 and $20, and both belong to filings the agent makes rather than filings you make.

File it with the Division of Corporations and wait for the record to update. Rocket Lawyer holds the designation until the state says otherwise.

Cancel the membership last. New York will not leave your company unreachable in the interval, since the state's own role never pauses, but the point of paying anybody is to control where the documents land. Keep that channel pointed somewhere useful the whole way through.
